Say “Ciao, piccolino!” to Luigi Gelato Verde – my new Fiat 500 TwinAir

It’s been three days since I drove Luigi off the showroom floor at Fiat Midrand, and the novelty of purring around town in Economy Mode still hasn’t worn off. I guess being crazy about all things Italian, it was inevitable that I would want to enjoy owning one of these little three-door babies before I actually have babies. And since there’s no time quite like the present… It had to be now or never… Besides, this new Fiat 500 TwinAir – the best little version ever born – was just released in South Africa. What can I say? Some people can’t help setting the trend 😉

One look at my ‘smooth mint’ bambino and you’ll know exactly why I’ve named him Luigi Gelato Verde. It’s so damn cute to look at, I just wanna lick him! Plus with a diminutive body and loads of character, he deserved a name that summed up his statement style. Then there’s the muscle underneath that good-looking hood; an 875cc twin cylinder Turbo engine which can only be described as an engineering masterpiece. It’s ultra-low on fuel consumption yet deceivingly powerful for its size reaching 100km/h in 11 seconds – the same as a VW Polo Comfortline 1.6

When it comes to nippy city cars on the market, the Fiat 500 TwinAir was voted nose and tail above the competition. It presents loads of innovative, nice-to-have features usually found in larger luxury vehicles; stop-start functionality which kicks in when the car is in neutral and your foot is on the brake, gear shift warning prompting you to move up or down a gear for the best engine performance, touch-screen U-Connect sound system which can be paired to multiple devices via Bluetooth, rear parking sensors, LED lights and a panoramic glass roof.

Closing the deal with Daryl, Gerrie and Christi at Fiat Midrand in just over a week was such a pleasant surprise. They went out of their way to personalise the vehicle and throw in a bunch of accessories from Italian-flag badges and chrome trim over the bonnet to Fiat-branded mats, valve caps and the ‘Italia’ key cover. The seats were also expertly covered in leather and embroidered with the “500” logo to suit my preferred colour scheme.

The reaction this little baby gets seems to differ from person to person; my younger brother admits that it’s not his kind of car but he can’t helping chuckling every time it roars like a lion cub. My elder brother has warned me to stay clear of trucks which I won’t ignore but that said, from a security perspective, I’ll rely on the five-star NCAP Euro rating, the seven airbags, the cabin which has proven to be pretty solid during crash testing and of course, a sincere prayer for many safe miles ahead.

Aah… This is indeed la dolce vita xxx
