A week ago, I was in a complete panic because I had no clue where I was going to stay when I arrived in Milan. My usual room was snatched away very suddenly leaving me with the daunting task of locating a reasonably priced hotel during a peak period, but thanks to the goodwill of my Italian friends who all tried their best to assist me, I could arrive here knowing that I had a place to put my head down at night. My South African friend, Carey, who lives in Milan was indeed my fairy godmother… She offered me her vacant apartment in Segrate, Milano 2 – a lush and peaceful neighbourhood dominated by apartment blocks, the San Raffaele Hospital and even the headquarters of Mediaset.
This morning, I decided to explore the area and capture the scenic slopes which remind me of Sun City’s Vacation Club with it’s curved roads, stairways, pathways and schedueled buses. Bridges across the roads make this neighbourhood pedestrian-friendly and convenience is all around thanks to the shops – a caffeteria, dry-cleaner, beautician and even a pharmacy – on the ground level of several apartment blocks. The bus stop, located just outside the NH Hotel, is only a few minutes away by foot and connects with the metro station, Cascina Gobba on the green line.
